What is Slippage?

The difference between the price you saw and the average price you actually got. The cost of crossing the spread in a thin book.

Slippage is the gap between the price you saw and the price you got, and it is caused by depth rather than by bad luck: your order eats the best offer, then the next, then the one after that, and your fill is the average of all of them. It is why the same $50,000 order is invisible in Bitcoin and violent in a thin altcoin. On the board you watch it happen — a single tank clears three price levels in a market with no depth behind them, and the front line jumps rather than walks.
