How to read crypto order flow (without a Bloomberg terminal)

9 min read · August 16, 2026 · order flow · tape reading · beginner

Order flow is the record of who ran out of patience. Everything else in a market is opinion; the tape is the only place opinions turn into money changing hands.

You do not need a professional terminal to read it. Every major exchange publishes its trades in real time, free, without an account. What most people lack is not access — it is a way to look at the stream that does not turn into noise after ninety seconds.

What a single print tells you

Each trade carries three facts: price, size, and which side crossed the spread. That third one does the work.

Two orders are involved in every trade. One was resting — the maker, patient, already on the book. One arrived and took it — the taker, the aggressor. The aggressor is the side that wanted it enough to pay the spread, and the aggressor is what moves price. A trade where the buyer was the aggressor is upward pressure, even if the price printed is identical to the last one.

A tape of a hundred trades at $1.0000 is not a flat market. It is a fight at a standstill, and knowing which side is doing the charging tells you which way it will break.

Reading size properly

Beginners read size in coins. Read it in dollars. Twelve thousand XRP and 0.19 BTC are the same trade; they just look nothing alike. Convert everything to notional value and the population sorts itself out immediately:

The four patterns worth knowing

Absorption. Heavy aggressive buying, and the price does not go up. Someone is selling into it, quietly, without showing a wall. Absorption is the single most useful thing in the tape, because it says the visible pressure is losing to invisible supply.

Clustering. Twenty trades in four seconds, all the same side, all similar size. That is one participant working an order through a scheduler, not twenty people agreeing. The market is being pushed by one actor.

The vacuum. A modest order moves the price further than it should. Nothing "happened" — the book was simply thin. Vacuums are how flash moves start, and they are visible before the move if you are watching depth rather than price.

Exhaustion. A big print in the direction of the trend, and then the flow stops entirely. The last buyer bought. Nothing left to push.

Why the aggressor side is so easy to get wrong

Most exchange feeds report the maker's side, not the taker's. Coinbase's public feed does exactly this: a trade marked side: "sell" means the resting order was a sell, which means the incoming trader bought. Read it literally and every buy shows up as a sell.

This one inversion has broken more homemade flow indicators than any other bug. If your tape says selling on a day the market rose 6%, you have found it. We hit it too, and it is called out in our own build notes for exactly that reason.

Turning it into something you can actually watch

The reason tape reading has a reputation for being hard is not conceptual. It is that a scrolling list of numbers exceeds what a human can hold in working memory after about a minute. Professionals solve it with footprint charts and heat maps — dense, expensive, and a non-starter for anyone who just wants to understand what is happening to a coin they own.

The alternative is to give the data a shape. Put buy pressure on one side, sell pressure on the other, size each trade by its dollar value, and let the boundary between them be the price. Now absorption looks like an army that cannot advance. Clustering looks like a column arriving in step. A vacuum looks like the line suddenly sliding across open ground. You are reading the same numbers; you are just using the part of your brain that was built for watching a field instead of the part that was built for arithmetic.

Where to get the data, free

Two public sources cover most of it, neither requiring a key:

That is the whole toolkit. The market has been publishing this in the open the entire time; the only real work is presenting it in a way a person can keep watching.
