The maker was already there. Their order was resting on the book when somebody else decided to cross the spread and take it, which is why makers usually pay lower fees — the exchange is paying them for the patience that made the trade possible at all. ⚠ A practical trap: public exchange feeds report the MAKER's side, so a trade tagged 'sell' means a resting sell was hit, and the aggressor was a buyer. Read it the other way round and every signal inverts.
