How much size is resting near the current price. Deep books absorb large orders; thin books do not.

Depth is the size resting near the current price, and it is the single best predictor of what your own order will do to the market. Two coins can print the same 24-hour volume and behave completely differently, because volume counts what already traded and depth measures what is standing there now.
